Site Reorganization

By Jeff | Oct. 27, 2015

You might notice things are a bit different. This is due to us migrating away from wordpress, which we felt was a bit bulky for our needs over to a new system called grav. Really what this means for you is that you should see smaller page sizes and faster load times.

We've also simplified the site a lot by separating the "Soft Puppy" and "Warm House" aspects into two different subsites as well as adding a new "Life" tab. That way if all you're interested in is puppy articles, house articles, or things about our life, you can hide what isn't relevant to you. Of course, you can always choose to view all posts if you want and searching and tags at the right will search through all posts by default.

Happy New Year, 2015!

By Jeff | Jan. 05, 2015

I hope everybody had a good 2014. Ours was filled with new adventures, projects, and of course, puppies. Here are the highlights from what we did this past year.

New Theme!

By Jeff | May. 18, 2014

You may have noticed things look a little different here at Soft Puppy Warm House. We’ve decided to update our theme to help improve responsive design and improve content visibility. The major changes are listed after the break.

2013: Year in Review

By Jeff | Dec. 27, 2013

How is it possible that another year has gone by? It feels like only yesterday we were celebrating our first Christmas in our new home and now we’ve already been here a year and a half. We continue to update and personalize our home. We finished our family room renovation with new fireplace surround, custom-built mantel and shelves, trim, crown molding, and carpet.

New Layout!

By Jeff | Jul. 16, 2013

I’ve been working hard over the last several weeks on some big changes here Soft Puppy Warm House. We’ve got an entirely new responsive layout that should not only give you a better experience on the desktop, but especially on mobile devices! All of the images on the page have also been updated to support retina graphics. I’ve still got a little work to do upgrading the graphics on the site to the higher quality versions, but they should be finished in the next few days. If you see anything odd, let me know in the comments or over on the github page.

Christmas Recap

By Hillary | Jan. 03, 2013

Until this year, I had never spent a Christmas away from my family, so when we decided to host Christmas at our house this year with Jeff’s family, I knew that I wanted to find a way to incorporate some of my family’s traditions, some of Jeff’s, and also add some new elements that were unique to us. For example, when it came to Christmas cookies, Jeff made Russian tea cakes and thumbprint jelly cookies for me; simple bars, cappuccino flats, and haystacks (chocolate peanut butter melted over chow mein noodles; as well as a few new favorites, like Ginger Snaps with three different kinds of ginger, French palmiers (puff pastry rolled in cinnamon sugar and orange zest), and chocolate truffles. In total he made 8 kinds of cookies, plus the 2 kinds his mother brought (ribbon jewel cakes and the best oatmeal cookies I’ve ever had)!

What Are We Thinking?

By Jeff | Dec. 15, 2012

It’s only 12 days until Christmas and we still have so much to do! For some reason, we thought it would be a good idea to try and completely reface our fireplace before Christmas in order to have a nice mantel to put our stockings on. In addition to that, I’ve developed a habit of seeing some new Christmas cookie recipe and thinking, “Oh, that looks good. I should make that!” So far, I want to make 10 different kinds of cookies. Any wagers as to how many actually get baked?

Theme Upgrade

By Jeff | Dec. 01, 2012

You might have noticed a slight difference in our page lately. This is our new version 2.0 blog theme. There aren’t too many big differences; most of the changes are to increase compatibility with older browsers and to get a more consistent look across all platforms. You can check out the full changelog after the break.

Last Day of NaBloPoMo!

By Jeff | Nov. 30, 2012

Whew! It's been a whirlwind month of posts here, but we won! 30 consecutive days of original content was a big goal for us, and there were definitely some days that we didn't really want to post anything (or felt like we had anything to post), but I thought it forced us to get things done on time more.

At Least We Have a Wreath

By Jeff | Nov. 29, 2012

Today was going to be Christmas decorating day, but as usual, things didn’t go quite as planned. Hanging lights outside is always difficult on a work day due to the sun going down, so we probably won’t get to those until the weekend.

Thanksgiving Week Recap

By Hillary | Nov. 25, 2012

The reason our posts have been so light the last few days is because we spent the Thanksgiving weekend with my family in the St. Louis area. It was a busy weekend with a full house — all of my dad’s family (minus one cousin) was also there visiting.

Post-Thanksgiving Day Traditions

By Jeff | Nov. 23, 2012

While most people look forward to Turkey Day food, for me, it’s actually the leftovers that I look forward to. Being able to eat pie a second day in a row is a big favorite of course. But the thing I look forward to the most is fresh turkey sandwiches on sourdough. I’m not a huge fan of plain turkey, but when you combine with sourdough it’s so much better.

Happy Thanksgiving!

By Jeff | Nov. 22, 2012

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! We hope everyone who was going somewhere had safe travels and has a great day. We have so much to be thankful for this year, so here’s a quick list of ten of the things we’re giving thanks for this year.

It's Beginning to Smell a Lot Like Thanksgiving

By Jeff | Nov. 20, 2012

If you asked me what Thanksgiving food I would pick if I could only have one, I wouldn’t have to think about it at all. Apple pie. While the rest of the stuff is fine, for me it’s just not Thanksgiving without a delicious apple pie. And don’t even try and fool me with something store bought. Those taste dreadful and I will turn it down. Since it’s so important to me, making this year’s apple pie became my responsibility.

Slow-Cooker Chicken Tacos

By Jeff | Nov. 08, 2012

I first made this recipe over the summer for Hillary's family at their bi-annual family reunion after finding it online here. I know generally people don't try new recipes on guests, but I do it anyways. While at the reunion I at least doubled the recipe, this most recent time I made it, I just did a single serving and it turned out delicious.

About Us

Nov. 02, 2012

It all started back in 2006 when a cute Northwestern freshman girl threw her frisbee into a thistle bush and an awkward guy went in to fetch it.
