Nova's First AKC Agility Trial

By Jeff | Jul. 28, 2015

This was a big weekend for Nova! We went to visit my parents and also competed in her first AKC agility trial on Sunday! If you recall, she tried her paw at UKC over a year ago and it didn't go quite as planned. We've been practicing really hard though and she's been consistently doing well in more advanced classes and at some fun runs.

Nova waits to run

We entered her in two different “games.” The first, called Standard, involves a variety of equipment such as a teeter, jumps, dog walk, and several others. The second is a faster game called Jumpers with Weaves (JWW) and only includes jumps, weaves, and tunnels. Since both Nova and I are new to agility, she started off in the “Novice A” class. Here, they run the same course as Novice B, but it’s reserved for new handlers and not just new dogs.

Nova got a qualifying score in both games and got a couple of ribbons! She paid attention almost the whole time in the Standard run, although she did miss her weave pole entry the first time and got distracted by one of the ring crew members. There was a section of equipment against the back wall that wasn’t gated off and when I gave her the “table” cue she hopped on on the things back there that kind of looked like a table. Oops!

In the JWW run, she was performing flawlessly until I had to cross behind her and I wasn’t able to cue her early enough for her to get the next jump. Fortunately, I was able to bring her back to me and she got it on the second try and finished the course.

We’re so happy with Nova and are excited to enter her in more trials. She needs to get 2 more qualifying scores (Qs) in Standard and she gets her Novice Agility (NA) title and 2 more Qs in JWW and she gets her Novice Agility Jumpers (NAJ) title!

Here’s the video from the event and the specific results.

Level Game Place Length Time Points
Novice A Standard 1st 137 yds 51.24 s 95
Novice A JWW 2nd 121 yds 32.67 s 95
